IN 1999, THE CONCEPT FOR ONE OF THE FASTEST MOVING EDUCATIONAL REFORM MOVEMENTS WAS BORN. THE BRAINCHILD OF CHRIS BIFFLE, WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING HAS EVOLVED INTO A TEACHING METHOD THAT IS TRANSFORMING CLASSROOMS AROUND THE WORLD.
Sometimes It's the Little Things
Sometimes you experience a seemingly insignificant event that ends up being life changing. One summer day, I had one of those experiences while searching the internet. While looking for classroom resources, I stumbled across a website called Power Teaching and decided to give it a look. The ideas and concepts on the site were instantly intriguing and something I thought I could implement in my classroom. I started slow using just the 5 class rules, the scoreboard, Class-Yes and Super Speed. They were an instant hit but I always felt there was something I was missing.
Fast forward 2 years. A grade level teammate and I got together for lunch and she started telling about a website she had found. It sounded strangely familiar. Yes, what I had known as Power Teaching was now Whole Brain Teaching. We planned over that lunch how our classrooms were going to look as we would start engaging the whole brains of our students. That day marked the beginning of what appeared was going to be an interesting but fun journey. Little did I know, things were about to get even better.
How much can an email impact your life? I found out recently as an email from Chris Biffle popped up in my inbox. It announced a WBT conference in New York City. On a whim, I told my teammate I wanted to go. In what seemed like a whirlwind, we got permission from our principal to attend and within a week, we were off to NYC. The morning of the conference, as we were sitting enjoying breakfast at the hotel, in walked Chris Biffle. He joined us for breakfast and gave us some individual feedback about our use of WBT in our own classrooms! That day changed my life. Seeing Chris and WBT in action throughout that conference gave me all the pieces I felt I was missing in my classroom. I always knew WBT was effective. I just didn't know how much better it could be until going through the NYC conference. Whole Brain Teaching is now in full force in my classroom! Since that time, I have completed the WBT intern process, become an executive board member and present conferences in the Northeast region and nationally.
Sometimes it's the little things that make a huge difference in our lives. Sometimes it's a random internet search, an unexpected email, or a chance meeting. I would like to offer you this "little thing" - an invitation to follow my website and my experiences into the world of Whole Brain Teaching and Learning. Come join me into a whole new world of educating. Power to the teachers!
